Regional Spotlight: Cajun Country

Cajun Country is located along the Gulf of Mexico in the South Central portion of Louisiana. The region was first settled by the French in 1775, who called it Acadiana or L’Acadie, and their influence can still be felt today. Here you will find a fascinating confluence of Acadian, Native American, and Creole influences, creating a unique culture of its own like nowhere else in the state. In Cajun Country, you’ll hear the distinct rhythms of Cajun and Zydeco music, taste the mouthwatering flavors of crawfish and boudin sausage, and explore the beautiful sights of its bayous and small towns. Cajun Country is home to working plantations and living history museums where the past and present emerge, such as the Acadian Village and Vermilionville Living History & Folklife Park. Take a swamp tour in the Atchafalaya Basin to see a variety of wildlife, from blue herons to alligators, or head to downtown Eunice to visit the Liberty Theater, the Cajun version of the Grand Ol’ Opry. There are also many wonderful cities here, including Lafayette and Abbeville, considered “the most Cajun place on earth.” Wherever you go in Cajun Country and whatever you decide to do, make sure you book a stay at one of the Louisiana Bed & Breakfast Association's many wonderful properties located throughout the region.

Plantations and Historic Homes

Caldwell House is located inside a luxurious, 100-year old home in the charming town of Abbeville. You’ll enjoy relaxing in their wicker chairs on the wrap-around porch or taking an afternoon stroll through their lovely gardens. Their rooms are spacious and include private baths and a daily Cajun-inspired breakfast. If you’re interested, you can rent out the entire house for a family reunion or holiday of up to twelve guests.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Creole-Caribbean Maison des Amis was built in 1870 on the legendary Bayou Teche. You’ll sleep well in their spacious, individually decorated rooms. Treat yourself to a full Cajun/Creole breakfast before taking a stroll in their lush gardens and soaking in the view from their gazebo.

Le Village Guest House and Event Space is located inside a late 19th century farmhouse featuring four charming guest rooms and a cozy parlor. On the grounds, you will also find the Old Chapelle Country Store that was robbed by the Bonnie and Clyde Gang in the 1930s. The Country Store, now Cypress Grove, is available for reunions, weddings, and retreats.
